I’ve been toying with the idea of starting an ice cream blog for quite some time. About fifteen years ago, I made a half-hearted attempt at starting one on the Blogger platform. I chose the username “The Ice Cream Man,” and named the blog “The Emperor of Ice Cream.” When my wife and a close friend each pointed out how the title sounded a bit sketch, and that my username sounded borderline predatory, I quickly and quietly abandoned the project before it ever really got off the ground.
I decided to give it another shot, and this time I’m ready to give it an honest go. On a purely personal level, I’m excited by the prospect of what this blog could be. I’ve loved eating ice cream since I was a child. In my late twenties, I started making ice cream at home. The experience was so rewarding that I upgraded from a freezer bowl-based maker to a fancy compressor-based maker (a Breville). But over the past few years, I’ve struggled to find the time to make ice cream consistently (due mainly to parenting). So if nothing else comes of it, I’m hoping this blog serves as a motivation for me to make ice cream more regularly and then share it with friends and family.
The premise of the blog will be pretty simple: each week I’ll make a different ice cream on my machine at home, using existing recipes I come across that catch my fancy. After making the ice cream, I’ll share my thoughts on the process, the finished product, and reactions from friends and family who sample the finished product. I’ll try to keep this space politics-free, but given my tendencies, I make no promises. I doubt there’ll be any overarching theme or organizing principle to the flavors and recipes I choose, but I might try to keep it seasonal / try various recipes aimed at some of the staple flavors (e.g., I plan on starting off with a test of 3 to 4 different vanilla ice cream recipes and comparing them from week to week). We’ll see how it goes.
Anyway, here’s to endless days of ice cream, both now, and in the future!
