A few weeks back, I volunteered to help a few of my old colleagues at Life Academy run an ice cream making workshop with some of their students. I was nervous we wouldn’t be able to pull off making ice cream in a classroom with 25 teenagers. But with a few camping stoves and a few ice cream making machines, we managed it just fine. In fact, I would call the whole thing a success. And it was a lot of fun!
One of the ice creams we made that day was Cinnamon Toast Crunch (aka, “CTC”1) ice cream. As any public school teacher will tell you—or at least any Oakland public school teacher—single serve CTC bowls are one of the more popular breakfast items served in school cafeterias and Advisory breakfasts across the District. My former coworker Rachel had a bag of CTC in her classroom (for the ice cream making) and insisted I take it with me at the end of the workshop. I obliged, thinking I would recreate the CTC ice cream we made with the students here on the blog.
Friends, that time has finally come. We did the Salt & Straw base with the students, because that recipe is so dang easy.
I’ve covered the Salt & Straw process ad nauseam at this point, so I’ll just post some pictures and the video and then tell you how it tasted.

I let the CTC steep in the fridge for about 7 hours or so and then strained it before churning.
The CTC absorbed some of the liquid, but no matter. Here’s the churning video!
I shared the ice cream with family at our 4th of July get together and unfortunately, forgot to get a photo. Before the get together started, I made a mental note to remember to take a picture of the ice cream scooped up…but then I went ahead and forgot all about that. Oh well.
Everyone in attendance seemed to think the ice cream was good. The consistency was light and fluffy, and the cinnamon flavor was mild—but that’s probably for the best because, as one family member pointed out, too much cinnamon would have been overpowering. I had also thought it would be a good ice cream to pair with apple pie, so I ate some with a bit of applesauce that Neela’s uncle had made, and it proved to be a nice combo.
Well that’s a wrap for this week. Three more weeks until I reach the 1 year mark for the blog. 🙏 Hope everyone had a nice Fourth of July weekend!
I really love the symmetry of CTC as an abbreviation. It just rolls off the tongue. However, the real question for you, dear reader, is what first comes to mind when you see the FTW abbreviation? Are you a “For the win!” kind of person, or do you immediately think of the other (better?) formation of “F*** the world”?
